All these walks are graded as harder/challenging. They are 6 or more miles in length and last 3+ hours so bring a packed lunch. The walks cross rough ground which is sometimes muddy so walking boots are needed. The walks will include inclines (some steep), often go over stiles and require a good level of fitness.
Wednesday 19th July
A 6.5 mile walk with 1540 ft (470 m) of ascent in about 3 hours: from Glyn Ceiriog to the Biddulph Tower on Y Foel, walking up past the church, up to the ridge road and on to the Tower, crossing the Berwyn Way and then back to the village. Meet at 9.15 for a 9.30 start in the car park at the Ceiriog Centre (LL20 7HE Grid Ref SJ 204379 ///mergers.alpha.rooms) on the B4500 (New Street) in Glyn Ceiriog. No dogs please. Refreshments available afterwards.
Wednesday 16th August
Meet at 9.25 in Wrexham General Railway Station to catch the 9.45 train to Chirk. A linear 8.5 mile walk with 2054 ft (625 m) of ascent through the grounds of Chirk Castle then down the Ceiriog Valley to Pontfadog, climbing out of the valley on to the upper Ceiriog Trail and finally down to Llangollen, returning by public transport. A good level of fitness is required for the walk which will last about 4.5 hours. No dogs please.
Wednesday 20th September
An approximately 3.5 hour, 7 mile walk with 1940 ft (590 m) of ascent from the top of the Horseshoe Pass. Meet at 9.15 for a 9.30 start opposite the Ponderosa café (LL20 8DR Grid ref SJ 192481 ///regulates.panic.drifters). A walk up and over Moel y Faen then to the top of Moel Gamelin and returning via the old Pass Road from Pentredwr. No dogs please.
Directions
The Ponderosa is on the A542 at the top of the Horseshoe Pass. There is parking across the road from the café.
Wednesday 18th October
Meet at 9.25 at Wrexham General Railway Station to catch the 9.45 train to Chirk. A linear 9 mile walk with 1540 ft (470 m) of ascent. After leaving the Ceiriog Valley, the walk will pick up Offa's Dyke Path and continue south, passing on the right very impressive parts of the Dyke itself. It will then carry on along the path to the old racecourse car park and finally go down via the lane and paths to Oswestry, returning on public transport. A good level of fitness is required for the walk. No dogs please.
Wednesday 15th November
An approximately 3 hour circular walk with 1780 ft (540 m) of ascent from Llangollen with a hot pot lunch at the Bridge Inn in Ruabon afterwards. Meet at 9.30 for a 9.45 start opposite the Bridge End Hotel in Llangollen (LL20 8RY Grid Ref SJ 215422 ///searcher.perused.spindles). A walk up past Dinas Bran through Dinbren Wood to Offa's Dyke Path and then up through the gulley to the top of Eglwyseg and returning on the permissive path to Llangollen. No dogs please.
Directions
Coming from Wrexham, The Bridge End Hotel is opposite the left turn to the bridge over the river and just before the railway station. Driving from Wrexham on the A539, go past the large Health Centre on the left as you come into Llangollen and about ¼ mile further along and just before the Ponsonby Arms, turn left into the long-stay (pay and display) car park (LL20 8RY Grid Ref SJ 217421 ///movie.craziest.chew).
Wednesday 20th December
A 3 hour circular walk above Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog with an ascent of 1565 ft (480 m) and the option of Xmas lunch at The Hand afterwards. Meet at 9.45 for a 10.00 start in the centre of the village (LL20 7LD Grid Ref SJ 157328 ///camps.mows.enacts). No dogs please.
Directions
Take the B4500 west from Chirk along the Ceiriog Valley for about 11 miles, going through Glyn Ceiriog. Then keep to the B4500 through Tregeiriog for another 1¼ miles to Llanarmon DC where there is limited parking.
